Armenian Currency Redesign
Art Direction / Graphic Design / Print
Overview
Banknotes are an extension of a country’s tourism and serve as storytellers. Armenia is a country rich in art, music, and craftsmanship, and it is important to showcase these on its banknotes, where it becomes part of everyday life. This redesign aims to transform Armenian currency into a more meaningful cultural artifact — one that reflects the nation’s identity while elevating its visual presence.
Research and Concept
The redesign process began with an analysis of the existing banknotes. While functional, the current designs felt visually outdated and did not fully capture the richness of Armenia’s cultural and historical landscape.
-
This insight guided the overall concept: to create a system that better represents what Armenia has to offer, both to its people and to the outside world.
-
Rather than focusing solely on traditional portraits, the redesign highlights figures whose contributions have shaped Armenian identity. Mesrop Mashtots is featured for his creation of the Armenian alphabet, a cornerstone of national culture and literacy. Komitas represents Armenia’s deep musical heritage, while Vardan Mamikonian embodies resilience and historical strength.
-
Beyond individuals, the redesign incorporates meaningful symbols that resonate across Armenian culture. Elements such as the pomegranate symbolize life and continuity, while khachkars reflect spiritual and artistic traditions through their intricate carvings. Architectural references like Armenian monasteries further connect the designs to the country’s landscape and heritage.
